Old Business

  1. Proposal 1: (Guard Only)

“Any guard class larger than 16 units will be split into no more than two classes according

to the highest score to date at the calendar halfway point of the competitive season. If

Easter falls within our competition season, it will not be factored as a competitive week.

Example: First competition of 2018 is on January 27. Championships are April 6-7.

Calendar date halfway point is Wednesday, February 28.”

Robyn Ball spoke on the proposal. There was a discussion about amending reading “larger than 15.” The email vote for proposal 1: Yes- 12 ; No- 3. The body vote for proposal 1: Yes- 10 ; No- 0. The total votes for Proposal 1: Yes- 22 ; No- 3. Proposal 1 passes. Robin Hill motioned we amend the proposal to read “Any guard class larger than 15” rather than 16. This motion passes with Yes- 10 body votes.

  1. Proposal 2: (Everyone)

“Every scholastic unit is required to provide one (1) volunteer to work a shift at

Championships. If a volunteer is not provided, the unit will be fined $50, and fines will

not exceed $100 per school. This money is due on or before the December meeting the

following school year.”

Robyn Ball spoke on the proposal. There was discussion on using students to represent a unit as a volunteer. There was also discussion on using college music majors more. Also, if a school wanted to help another school out by dedicating a volunteer for them, they could. The email vote for Proposal 2: Yes- 11 ; No- 10. The body vote for Proposal 2: Yes- 13 ; No- 10. The total votes for Proposal 2: Yes- 24 ; No- 20. Proposal 2 passes.

  1. Proposal 3: (Percussion Only)

“Any Percussion ensemble attending a WGI sanctioned event must be enrolled in the same

class in the MIA as they are with WGI. If WGI were to ever change the classification of a

group, so must the MIA.”

Steven Ross spoke on the proposal made by Kevin Welborn. Several years ago a few groups did that but it is now not serving the purpose as to why they did it. Also, it has been confusing for judges. Most other circuits follow this same type of procedure. There was discussion about how this would affect groups that are in a class below A in MIA, which is the lowest class recognized on the WGI level, but chooses to go to a WGI event. The email vote for Proposal 3: Yes- 6 ; No- 1. The body vote for Proposal 3: Yes- 10 ; No- 0. The total votes for Proposal 3: Yes- 16 ; No- 1. Proposal 3 passes.

Josh Forsythe makes a motion to amend the wording to where the proposal would be amended to be read. “Any Percussion ensemble attending a WGI sanctioned event must be enrolled in the same class in the MIA as they are with WGI, if the class exists within WGI. If WGI were to change the classification of a group, so must the MIA.” Steven Ross second.  10 “yes” votes to amend the proposal to this wording passes.

New Business

  1. Brian Joyce made a motion for a Winds representative to be on the board. Mickey Mangum discussed that the board would vote on this and it would be voted on in December.

  1. Mickey Mangum discussed doing away with the December meeting and restructure the way the meetings are done/scheduled so that it allows us to operate more smoothly. He stated that December is too late to change things for the upcoming season. Also, this would allow units that are in TN or not a part of the MBA to be able to attend and not miss crucial information. This would be possible in the future. We WILL have a December meeting this year.

Motion to adjourn by Dustin Thrasher. Suzie Phillips second.
